Woman in Field, 1880. Watercolor on paper. Signed & dated lower right. Matted & framed under glass. This naive watercolor evidences Stetson’s early career as he struggles to hone his painting skills. A noted documenter – Stetson’s signature and date indicate that ithe work dates from the inaugural year he helped found the Providence Art Club to promote art culture in Providence. Charles Walter Stetson (1858-1911), landscape, portrait painter and etcher, was born in Tiverton , Rhode Island. Stetson was mostly self-taught as an artist, with little or no formal training in art available in Providence at that time. But Stetson did associate and study other RI artist of his day like E.M Bannister & G.W. Whitaker. By 1878, when he opened his first artist studio in Providence at the age of twenty. By the turn of the century, Stetson was now living in Italy, with a studio in Rome & his works highly sought after by Americans that now travelled to purchase them.
