Description
"Cows by Stream", 1881. Watercolor on paper. Signed & dated lower right. Dimensions: 10" x 14". Matted & framed under glass. This naive watercolor evidences Stetson’s early career as he honed his painting skills. The signature and date indicate that the work dates from the second year after he helped found the Providence Art Club to promote art culture in Providence. Charles Walt Stetson (1858-1911), landscape, portrait painter and etcher, was born in Tiverton, RI. Stetson was mostly self-taught as an artist, with little formal training in art available in Providence at that time. But Stetson did associate and study other RI artists of his day like E.M. Bannister & G.W. Whitaker. By 1878, when he opened his first artist studio in Providence at the age of twenty. By the turn of the century, Stetson was now living in Italy, with a studio in Rome & his works highly sought after by Americans that now travelled abroad to purchase them.
