Description
Frederick Swynnerton (1858-1918) UK/India. Ottoman Scene, c.1900. Oil on canvas. 11 1/2" x 16 1/2"Swynnerton achieved some acclaim painting portraits in England in the 1880's, and moved to India sometime around 1890, where his brother Charles was a chaplain in the Indian army, and where he sought to paint portraits of Indian nobility and scenes of daily life. He married Louisa Oldfield Angelo in 1892 in Bengal, and started a family. Another of his brothers was the sculptor Joseph Swynnerton, who was married to the painter Anne Louise Swynnerton, the first woman elected to the Royal Academy, according to the British Museum. This painting appears to depict a mosque, somewhere in the Ottoman empire. It comes out of an old estate in Malta, and is one of the few known examples of the artist's work.
