Description
Late Roman to Coptic, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. Skillfully carved from cow bone, a standing female figure perhaps representing Venus - goddess of love and beauty - holding her hands beneath her bosom, a characteristic pose for the goddess which has been interpreted as a gesture of fertility. Her form is curvaceous and well-composed, and her tranquil visage stares serenely past the confines of space and time. Strong detailing of her visage, headdress, and coiffure sets this example apart. Size: 1" W x 3.3" H (2.5 cm x 8.4 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.
