Mark Twain Bold Signature
The signature of beloved American humorist Samuel L. Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, as "Yrs truly / Mark Twain." N.d., n.p. On a paper fragment later laid down on an autograph or scrapbook album page. The signature clip measures 4.625" x 2.75" while the page overall measures 6.625" x 4." Expected wear including light toning, isolated adhesive smears, and a few wrinkles to the album page, else near fine. Accompanied by a modern black and white photograph printed on Kodak paper showing Twain, in his iconic white three-piece suit, standing next to an unidentified woman, 5" x 7." Provenance: Also comes with an invoice dated October 29, 2001 from Seaport Autographs (Mystic, Connecticut).
Mark Twain began his fifty-year-long writing career as a Western journalist, later producing many well-known novels, short stories, travel accounts, and essays. Twain followed up the popular and critical acclaim of "Tom Sawyer" (1876) with other adventure and fantasy tales, including "The Prince and the Pauper" (1881), "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (1884), and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court" (1889).
