Nailor Stables Receipt, Fantastic J.W. Booth Escape Association
Partially Printed Document Signed, “Recd Payment / A Nailor Jr”, 1p, 8.5" x 4.75", Washington, February 17, 1879, being an original Nailor Stables billhead receipt totaling $5.00 due for carriage for Mr. Kimball for two days. Endorsed at verso. Folds, light toning, minor soiling, else near fine condition.
Nailor Stables was “Nearly opp. National Theatre and Willards’ Hotel” and was close by Ford’s Theatre, where President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865. According to one story, John Wilkes Booth rented space from Nailor Stables to keep his one-eyed mare. On the night of the assassination, Booth’s escape horse was waiting for him in the alley behind Ford’s Theater. A copy of the story behind the escape is included.
