Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel depicting a recumbent canine with a flared spout emanating from its back. The face bears incised striations indicative of wrinkles, perky ears, eyes accented with white pigment, and enormous fangs. Dogs were associated with death and guiding souls into the underworld, so this vessel was perhaps a burial urn intended to hold the remains of a deceased individual. Size: 8.2" L x 4.5" W x 4.9" H (20.8 cm x 11.4 cm x 12.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
