Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery dog vessel seated upon bent hind legs and extended forelegs. The plump canine features a perky tail, a thick neck, and a raised head. The skyward-facing countenance exhibits a pair of incised, diamond-shaped eyes, a petite snout, a gaping mouth, and a tall set of perky ears. The highly burnished surfaces bear an attractive luster that nicely complements the earthen brown hues of the pottery. The unusual feature of this dog is the attenuated or missing snout, which may have been the result of a previous injury. Size: 8.5" L x 4.75" W x 7.625" H (21.6 cm x 12.1 cm x 19.4 cm)

Restoration to left ear, right foreleg, bottom half of left foreleg, left hind leg, and base of tail, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, nicks, and pitting to most surfaces, with fading to surface pigment, and light encrustations. Great preservation to overall canine form.
