Autographed carte-de visite of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) United States Army officer (wounded at Gettysburg) and Democratic nominee for President in 1880. Carte de visite showing bust view of Hancock in profile facing left wearing uniform with major general rank straps. Carte is signed on obverse below image "Winf. S. Hancock, Major Genl, U.S. Vols., Commdg M.M. Dept.". Reverse of carte features period ink inscription "Major General Winfield S. Hancock--US Volunteers--Brevet Major General US Army--the Middle Military Division. He wrote his autograph on this the --this evening--Thursday Sept. 7, 1865.". Carte presents backmark of Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries as well as frontmark with 1865 date of M.B. Brady & Co. Reverse of carte presents 2-cent Internal Revenue proprietary stamp. Tones of image are extremely strong with manuscript ink being dark. Provenance: Gary Wolfer collection.
