1776 Map, PARTIE ORIENTALE DU CANADA, AVEC LA NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE, L'ACADIE, ET LA TERRE-NUEVE, by P. Santini
1776-Dated First Edition, Hand-Colored Map, PARTIE ORIENTALE DU CANADA, AVEC LA NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE, L'ACADIE, ET LA TERRE-NUEVE, by P. Santini of Venice, Italy, Framed, Choice Extremely Fine.
First edition of Santini's large Double-page map of Canada, New York and New England based upon D'Anville's seminal map of 1746. This is Santini's map of the Northeastern Atlantic coastline, showing the area from Philadelphia to Newfoundland, and including New England, Quebec and Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. This map is based closely on an earlier French version by D'Anville. This map utilizes the same decorative cartouche as De Vaugondy's map of Canada, but does not include the large inset map of the Great Lakes. The highly decorative cartouche in the lower right quadrant displays a beaver and an animal pelt in references the lucrative fur trade in the area. The map measures 18-3/4" x 22-5/8" by sight and is professionally matted and framed under archival UV Plexiglas in a handsome, gilt wooden frame to an overall size of 27" x 30.25" and ready to hang on display. A very bright clean and attractive example with excellent eye appeal, not examined out of the frame. This is the first example of this historic Santini map that we have offered. Certainly, its important date of "1776" is magical for American Revolutionary War collectors.
Paolo Santini (1729-1793) was an Venetian engraver known especially for his religious prints and fine Cartographic engravings. He published in Venice and may have a been a member of the clergy. In his maps, he largely adopted and adapted the work of his French counterparts, especially the brothers de Vaugondy.
