West Africa, Mali, Djenne peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An elegant pottery vessel boasting a fascinating form with a round yet stable base, a bulbous body, a carinated shoulder, and a conical spout surmounted by a gently flared rim. Nicely burnished, the red-slipped surface of the jar has been decoratively incised with horizontal bands and vertical and diagonal striations formed from multitudes of petite dashed lines. Professionally repaired with restoration over break lines. Area of fire-darkening on side, minor chip to rim, and expected surface wear throughout, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with liberal remains of dashed lines. Earthen deposits throughout.
