Item Details
Description
Native American, southwestern United States, Four Corners region, Southern Colorado Plateau, Pueblo I / Pueblo II (Anasazi) period, ca. 875 to 1050 CE. A remarkable pottery bowl presenting rare black-on-white decoration of a central anthropomorphic male or lizard figure surrounded by a petaloid starburst motif on its interior basin. The minimalist figure is shown with limbs spread and bent at knees and elbows as a lengthy tail or phallus extends below him. His circular head is supported by an elongated neck as a rectangle surrounds his torso and several linear striations extend from his midsection. A pair of stylized smiling faces surround the starburst motif, adding to the mystery of the design. Size: 6" Diameter x 2.8" H (15.2 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990; John B. Kendrick II was that son of John B. Kendrick, Wyoming governor and US senator
