Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A mold-formed faience amulet depicting Duamutef, the jackal-headed Son of Horus. Covered in deep, lustrous, azure-hued glaze, Duamutef is shown facing forward with straight legs, protruding feet, and a lengthy wig covering his perky ears and pointed snout. Traditional to his iconography, the ancient god stands mummiform and holds a length of wrapping linen before him. The verso of the amulet is flat. Perforations through his head and feet show how this amulet was bound to the linings of a linen-wrapped mummy. Duamutef was charged with protecting the stomach of the deceased and was himself protected by the goddess Neith. Size: 0.6" W x 1.9" H (1.5 cm x 4.8 cm)
