Description
Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, 21st to 25th Dynasty, ca. 1069 to 664 BCE. An ovoid steatite scarab covered in lustrous blue-green glaze. The topside features a bulky, folded wing carapace, sinuous legs, and a trapezoidal head with a frilled frontal clypeus, all above a suspension hole oriented lengthwise through the body. The bottom of the insect features a series of inscribed hieroglyphs that translate to "Setepenmaat" (whom Maat chose)," an unusual standalone statement that is typically seen with additional hieroglyphs. Size: 0.62" L x 0.46" W (1.6 cm x 1.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Scottish collection, acquired via descent, before 2000

Minor nicks to topside of scarab, with light abrasions to top and bottom, otherwise intact and very good. Great remains of blue-green glaze and hieroglyphs.
