Description
Isaac Huger document signed ("I Huger Br General"). Two pages on one leaf, 13" x 8.25", [South Carolina]; October 1, 1779. Manuscript Document. Docketed. Brigadier General Isaac Huger endorses a monthly return of troops within his brigade. Manuscript document titled, "Monthly Return of the Continental Troops in Brigadier General Huger's Brigade." The 2nd South Carolina Regiment commanded by Col. Morrison and the 1st Virginia Regiment under Col. Parker are included. It lists the men by rank and includes officers and "Rank and File" which are "fit for duty" with notations regarding "Alterations since the last Return". A table on the verso records 374 men "fit for action" with only twenty-three as unfit. Signed and dated as brigadier general, "I Huger Br General / October 1st. 1779." Isaac Huger (1743-1797), a veteran of the Anglo-Cherokee War of the 1760s, was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the 1st South Carolina Regiment in June 1775. He was appointed commander of the 5th South Carolina Regiment the next year as a colonel and by January 1779, he was promoted to brigadier general. Huger was wounded at the Battle of Stono Ferry and, a mere week after this document was signed, led the Georgia and South Carolina militia at the unsuccessful Second Battle of Savanah on October 9, 1779. Under General Greene's command, Huger saw action at the battles of Guilford Court House and Hobkirk's Hill. After the war, he served as Vice President of the Society of the Cincinnati of South Carolina. The document is accompanied by a vignette portrait of Huger.
