Item Details
Description
Special Discharge from the United States Corps of Marines partly printed document signed by General Archibald Henderson (1783-1859). Washington, D.C., 3 February 1858. 1 page, ## x ## in. WITH Partly printed acknowledgment signed by Glazier to verso. Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., 5 February 1858. Witnessed by John M. Kim.

A special discharge for Private Frederick W. Glazier. A silversmith from Connecticut, Glazier enlisted on 2 December 1854 in New York. The document acknowledges that he is "hereby discharged ...by order of the Secretary of the Navy on the settlement of his accounts." A note at the foot dated the same day notes that Glazier was owed $56.57." A separate hand also notes that a month's pay was forfeit "by sentence of C.M. of Oct. 1857 Frig. Congress Now at Head Qrs. Washington." The verso of the document provides acknowledgment by Glazier that he "received all my pay, clothing, and emoluments of every description whatsoever."

Signed by General Archibald Henderson (1783-1859), the "Grand Old Man of the Marine Corps", the longest-serving Commandant of the Marine Corps (1820-1859). He is credited with keeping the Marine Corps part of the Navy by thwarting attempts by President Andrew Jackson to combine the Corps with the Army in 1829. He served in the field as Commandant during the Indian Campaigns in the 1830s, apocryphally pinning a note to his home’s door reading, "Gone to Florida to fight the Indians. Will be back when the war is over." While he did not take the field, he oversaw Marines who served in the Mexican-American War. A sword was presented to him at the end of the war inscribed, "From the Halls of Montezuma, to the Shores of Tripoli" providing the opening line to the Marines' Hymn.
