Description
Uncased tintype of a Native American, likely Osage, warrior. c. 1870s.

This a simple yet powerful image, with the unknown subject seated in a sparse studio. He wears short hair pipe breast plates favored by southern plains Indians and "German silver" metal arm bracelets. His hair is worn in a roach style.

The manner of the subject's dress strongly indicates he was a member of the Osage, a large tribe of fierce warriors principally located in Kansas at the time this portrait would have been struck.
