Item Details
Description
Civil War-era CDV of a seated young man, still housed in its original album page. A period ink inscription below the image reads, “Johnie Fletcher, killed by Indians.”

John Fletcher was among 13 travelers killed during the Plum Creek Massacre near Lexington, Nebraska. On 8 August 1864, a war party of more than 100 Cheyenne and Arapaho attacked a wagon train carrying freight from Sidney, Iowa, to Denver, Colorado. Fletcher was reported as scalped, killed, and partially burned. He was buried at the massacre site the next morning.
