Description

A George III sterling silver tankard, London 1769 by John King

Of baluster from upon a spreading circular foot, the hinged double domed lid raised by an openwork â€˜chair backâ€™ thumbpiece, with moulded hinges upon a double C scroll handle, terminating in a gadrooned scroll moulded terminal. An applied central girdle, the lid with incised concentric circles. The front engraved with a contemporaneous coat of arms surmounted by a crest of a stag trippant, all reserved within a rococo cartouche of rocaille C scroll and foliage, the tips of the lower C scrolls with icicles below pediment sections. Fully marked underneath and to the lid interior.

The arms and crest are for Robinson

Probably for one of three sons of William Robinson (1675-1720) and Anne Walters (1677-1730):

Most Rev. Richard Robinson, 3rd Baronet then 1st Baron Rokeby (1708-1794)

Thomas married Lady Elizabeth Howard (1701-1739), daughter of Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle (1669-1738) and Lady Anne de Vere Capell (d.1752) on 25th October 1728 at Belfrey's, York, Yorkshire, England. He married, secondly a Sarah Booth at Barbados, she did not return to England with him. He died on 3 March 1777 at Chelsea, London, England, without issue. His brothers were unmarried and died without issue. Without a Baronetâ€™s augmentation or a cadency mark it is impossible to say which brother this belonged to without contemporary evidence.
