Description

An early George III sterling silver ‘tea tub’ tea caddy, London 1763 by John Parker and Edward Wakelin

Of cylindrical form with a flush hinged flat lid surmounted by a detachable laurel branch finial. The exterior with incised and engraved decoration in the chinoiserie manner to resemble wooden slats divided by borders of trailing foliate scrolls against a striated ground. Each of the four panels engraved with a stylised Chinese character, either Chang 昌 or Yi 義. Fitted with a ‘snap shut’ locking mechanism, with silver key, pierced fret form. Engraved with scratch weight underneath 12 = 9. Fully marked underneath and with lion passant to lid interior only.
