Hunter Thompson TLS from Beat Outpost, Big Sur, 1960

American Journalist and Author Hunter Stockton Thompson (1937-2005) Typed Letter Signed, “HST”, 1p, 8.5” x 11”, Big Sur, December 29, 1960. Thompson adds a handwritten note at bottom, “I just figured out my total income for the year – including such as reward $ from Am. Exp, model fees, etc. – and it adds up to $970 / I wonder how much I spent this year?” Flattened folds, small areas of paper loss to edges, dampstain at bottom, else near Fine condition.

Thompson writes a humorous letter to his friend, Paul Semonin, “Dear Fireweather”, in part, “Here is your Christmas present. I feel certain you will recall the time & place of both shots. If not, ask…Dog days coming soon. Back to SF on Jan 6 to seek work. C-J [Kentucky paper The Courier-Journal] wants a story on 'Louisville secretaries in SF.' Also one on 'off-beat spots in SF.’ These should make me sick enough to become a legitimate ward of the state…Bone called last night, drunk, and said nothing…No dice on the money-front. How about you? / Extra tidings -- just came up with a shot (Big Sur coast at dawn) that has put me in the front rank of American photographers.”
