Description

George Walton DS Vouching for Rev War Gun Powder Smuggler

1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.25" x 8.75", Savannah, Georgia, dated February 12, 1785. Signed "Geo Walton, late Colonel of the Chatham Militia." The document is a certification of Samuel Stiles' service in the Revolutionary War and confirmation that Stiles served as a private in Walton's regiment.

In full:

"This is to certify that Samuel Stiles was an inhabitant of Chatham County, and of course a private in my regiment - that he was during the usurpation in refuge in the Northern States - and is entitled to all the emoluments allowed to persons of that description." With docketing on verso. The document has flattened folds, with separations that have been partially repaired with archival tape. Toning and soiling throughout. A few small holes and chipping at the folds as well. Large and bold signature.

George Walton (1749-1804) signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative from Georgia. He went on to serve as the Governor of Georgia (two separate times) and as a U.S. Senator. He was also a founder and trustee member of both the Academy of Richmond County and of Franklin College (now the University of Georgia). After his second stint as Governor, Walton became a judge of the superior court, a position he held from 1790 until his death.

Samuel Stiles (Ca. 1737-1808) moved to the United States with his brother, Benjamin Stiles, from Bermuda in about 1769. When the Revolutionary War commenced, Stiles joined the American cause and spent much of the war securing gunpowder and ammunition from Bermuda for the colonists. In retribution, the British Government offered a large reward for the apprehension of any persons engaged in such theft, which is likely why this document states Stiles sought refuge in the North during the "usurpation".
