Matthew Thornton Superb Partial Document Signed, May 21, 1780
A small slip, measuring 5.25" x 2", [Place illegible due to clipping], dated May 21, 1780. The clipping includes a short inscription by Thornton, followed by his signature, reading: "Received an order on the Treasurer for a Note for the within Sum." The slip has been mounted to a slightly larger sheet, measuring 5.25" x 2.875" overall. With toning and foxing throughout. The left edge is slightly rough. Boldly Signed.
Matthew Thornton (1713-1803) was a Declaration Signer from New Hampshire. Prior to the Revolutionary War, he earned a medical degree, opened a private practice in Londonderry, New Hampshire, and served as an army surgeon during the Louisbourg campaign of the 1740s. Thornton also served in the local militia, as a justice of the peace, and as a colonial representative. When the Declaration of Independence was drawn up, Thornton served as one of three New Hampshire delegates to the 1776 Continental Congress and signed the document in November 1776.
