James Madison ALS Boldly Penned With Mysterious Content
1p, measuring 8" x 9.75", Washington, D.C., dated December 6, 1817. Signed "James Madison" and addressed to Hon. Richard Cutts. Madison requests Cutts to forward a group of letters to the Department of State, writing: "…I know not whether Mr. Brent or Mr. Purviance, be the most proper hand to commit it to." He continues, including a message from his wife, writing: "Mrs. M intended to accompany this with a letter to her sister; but puts of[f] writing till the next mail, having nothing more to say now than this will say, that we are well and that you all enjoy affectionate wishes." The letter has flattened mail folds and additional creasing. Moderate toning, foxing, and soiling throughout. The integral leaf appears to have been clipped, with partial loss to the address panel. Some minor chipping and loss at the edges. Boldly signed by Madison.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
