Arnhem Land, Australia, earth pigments on stringybark, fastened to hardwood branch stays with woven natural fibres, measuring 60" h x 18" w (including hardwood stays). Gallery label attached. An example of the artist's work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. Note: In Australian Aboriginal folklore, Mimih Spirits are willowy shaped supernatural beings who are considered the original inhabitants of Australia, and who taught the Aboriginal people how to survive in the wilderness as well as instructed them in their belief systems surrounding rituals & ceremonies. Rock painted images of Mimih spirits dating 50,000 years old, have been discovered in the surrounding areas of Arnhem Land.
