Jimmy Njiminjuma (1945-2004) Western Arnhem Land, Northern Territory Australia, earth pigments on stringybark, fastened to hardwood branch stays with woven natural fibers. Dimensions, 47" high x 25" wide (including hardwood stays). Unsigned but documented & authenticated, see attached Gallery label & supplemental info sheets. Note: Jimmy Njiminjuma is recognized as one of the most important & influential aboriginal artists from the Western Arnhem Land of the Australian Northern Territory, and is represented in the collection of the New South Wales Art Gallery. Comparative examples of the artists bark paintings been sold at Bonham’s as well at other notable auction houses & galleries. In Australian Aboriginal folklore Yawkyawk are water sprites or mermaid-like creatures who live both in the water and in trees, and who can take human form as well as transform into dragonflies, signifying the end of the rainy season.
