Michael Naborlhborlh (Aboriginal Australian, Bininj people, Burdoh Clan, 1966 to present) ca. 1999, "Namarrkon" ("Lightning Man"). This is a wonderful hand painted piece on eucalyptus bark, depicting Namarrkon, an ancestral being. The artist uses stylization to depict this being who is comprised of linear and geometric shapes in white, red, black, and yellow on a sienna brown ground. Namarrkon squats and lightning is represented by the white lines running from his head to his knees. The panel is pierced, and two sticks are attached with twine to either end to frame the panel. Namarrkon is the Kunwinjku name for a Lightning Man, the spirit who helped shaped the world during the Dreamtime. He throws stone axes to create the thunder, and the axes are represented by the black protrusions on his knees! The artist Michael Naborlhborlh paints in the kunwinjku style, characterized by the crosshatching seen here, a traditional form that has been used for centuries.
