after John Hoppner (British, 1758-1810), Portrait of Sir James Shaw (with Mezzotint)
oil on canvas, unsigned, half-length, he holds a rolled paper inscribed "The King's Order of Precendence," the canvas verso with John Wikey artist supplier stencil, presented in a period ornate gilt frame with gallery plaque, frame verso with Sotheby's label.
Accompanied by corresponding mezzotint printed 1806.
Stretcher size 29 7/8 x 25 in.; Frame dimensions 42 x 37 in. (painting); Frame dimensions 19 1/4 x 15 in. (mezzotint)
Sir James Shaw, 1st Baronet (1764-1843) came from a humble background in Ayrshire, in south-west Scotland. He became Lord Mayor of London in 1805. In 1806, he was granted the Kings Order of Precedence and allowed to lead the funeral procession for Lord Nelson.

Condition
Some areas impact and stress crackle and stretcher marks; small area of paint loss near far right middle canvas edge; some small minor areas of retouch visible under UV light. Mezzotint with scattered foxing and few stains; not examined out of frame.
