Canvas has been removed from original stretcher, relined, and applied to current stretcher. There is a thin layer of what appears to be like glassine paper covering the perimeter of the stretched canvas. This paper creates an approximately .25" border to the canvas recto. Beginning at the top of the painting, there are approximately 4-5 scratches to the surface, the largest measuring 1.5". To the right center canvas, there are 5-6 scratches, the largest measuring 4" diagonally with varnish loss. To the lower portion of the painting, there are approximately 10-12 surface scratches/nicks. When examined under blacklight, a medium layer of varnish fluoresces overall and there is evidence of restoration and overpainting to the collar underneath the left ear, along the right shoulder, and down the center of his shirt. There are also various smaller retouches to the lower portion of the painting. It is possible that previous restoration used heat to stabilize the surface as portions of the painting appear more flat than others. To the lower left quadrant, there was a vertical scratch which has been restored and there is light craquelure to this area. Despite varnish loss to the scratched areas, this painting shows well
