**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Late Nazca, Phase 6, ca. 550 to 750 CE. An impressive pottery stirrup vessel, intricately hand-painted with the complex image of 2 anthropomorphic mythical beings in hues of gray, cream, beige, orange, burgundy, pink, and black. The ancient vessel boasts a bulbous form with a rounded bottom and a pair of petite conical spouts rising from the top that are connected via a stirrup handle. Each abstract creature on the exterior features human legs wearing an elaborate loincloth and a huge, monstrous mask with large eyes and an open mouth surrounded by dozens of tentacle-like extensions. Size: 3.9" Diameter x 4.5" H (9.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
