Native American, Southwestern United States, Four Corners region, southern Colorado Plateau, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 1030 to 1175 CE. An attractive redware pottery bowl of the Wingate Red-on-Black type with a round but stable base, gently expanding walls, a thin rim, and a deep interior basin. Within the basin is an intricate, black-painted decorative program consisting of thick, diagonal bands as well as linear, steppe, and geometric motifs. The middle of the basin is left unadorned and provides an intriguing void in the otherwise densely decorated area. The exterior of the rim additionally boasts liberal remains of black pigment.
