Native American, North America, Southwestern United States, Mimbres, Classic Period, ca. 1000 to 1150 CE. A bold black-on-white coil-formed pottery bowl of a hemispherical form with a round but stable base, gradually expanding walls, and a thick rim that surrounds the deep basin. The exterior is unpainted, exhibiting the buffware surface of the fired pottery- characteristic of Mimbres fine-line pottery. The basin is covered in a creamy white ground and overpainted in black linear and stepped triangular shapes, forms that may have been inspired by the dramatic geology of the Mimbres homeland. The vessel was overfired, leading to the black pigment becoming a deep, earthy red-brown color in areas- a very lovely example! Size: 8" Diameter x 3" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm)
