On 28 June 1963, Hermann Nitsch and Otto Muehl invited to a festival in and in front of the latter’s studio in Perinetgasse, which was planned as a sequence of individual actions, including Nitsch’s third action. The public and the police turned up in large numbers, and it was the first occasion on which Ludwig Hoffenreich took photographs for the Actionists. Nitsch performed a lamb tearing, used blood water and other materials for various actions, drank sugared wine and vinegar. This heightening of sensual and psychological experience into the excessive aimed at a cathartic, drive-discharging abreaction event. At the end of Nitsch’s action, during which the present photograph was taken, the event was broken off by the police and Muehl had to postpone his planned actions. Both were reported to the police and served two weeks in custody. On the occasion of the opening of the Orgien Mysterien Theater in Prinzendorf ten years later, Studio Morra & Pari Editori Dispari and Francesco Conz published the elaborate portfolio “Das Orgien Mysterien Theater. Early Actions”, including the impressive print. Am 28. Juni 1963 luden Hermann Nitsch und Otto Muehl in und vor dessen Atelier in der Perinetgasse zu einem Fest, das als Abfolge von einzelnen Aktionen geplant war, darunter Nitschs dritte Aktion. Es erschien zahlreich Publikum sowie Polizei, und es war die erste Gelegenheit, bei der Ludwig Hoffenreich für die Aktionisten fotografierte. Nitsch vollführte eine Lammzerreißung, verwendete Blutwasser und andere Materialien für verschiedene Handlungen, trank gezuckerten Wein und Essig. Diese Steigerung von sinnlicher und psychischer Erfahrung ins Exzessive zielte auf ein kathartisches, triebentladendes Abreaktionsereignis. Am Ende von Nitschs Aktion, bei dem die vorliegende Aufnahme entstand, wurde die Veranstaltung von der Polizei abgebrochen und Muehl musste seine geplanten Aktionen verschieben. Beide wurden angezeigt und verbüßten je zwei Wochen Arrest. Anlässlich der Eröffnung des Orgien Mysterien Theaters in Prinzendorf zehn Jahre später legten das Studio Morra & Pari Editori Dispari und Francesco Conz die aufwändige Mappe “Das Orgien Mysterien Theater. Frühe Aktionen” auf, aus der der eindrucksvolle Abzug stammt.
