Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE; Ecuador, Puruha, ca. 6th to 12th century CE. A beautiful set of 2 hand-built pottery bowls from ancient Mesoamerica and South America. First is an Ecuadorian Puruha bowl with a squat foot, a hemispherical basin, and intricate negative resist motifs presents in black, red, and yellow-white atop a beige ground. The larger brownware bowl is of Maya origin and exhibits a planar base, fluted exterior walls, and a repeating register of long-beaked cranes facing to the right just beneath the rim. Size (Maya): 8.125" W x 3" H (20.6 cm x 7.6 cm); (Puruha): 7.8" W x 3.5" H (19.8 cm x 8.9 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition
Puruha bowl repaired with adhesive residue along break lines. Maya bowl repaired with restoration, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Both pieces have abrasions, fading to pigment, and softening to some finer details. Nice preservation to overall forms and decorative motifs.
