Description

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Xenon, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A gorgeous, wheel-thrown pottery olpe with a flat base, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a squat, flared rim, and an applied strap handle joining rim to shoulder, all covered in lustrous black glaze. Applied matte red-pink pigment is displayed in three registers of vertical frets on top, Greek key in the middle, and undulating waves on bottom. Some of the glazed areas have developed faint layers of silvery iridescence which imbue the vessel with an elegant presentation. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219, 1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added pale red decoration over black glaze. Size: 2.875" W x 3.125" H (7.3 cm x 7.9 cm).

Condition

Small losses to handle, rim, and body, with fading to original glaze and applied pigment coloration, and minor abrasions. Light earthen deposits and faint silvery iridescence throughout. Nice craquelure to some glazed areas.
