Item Details
Description
Wonderful personal relic of the Civil War: a leather-bound copy of "Ivanhoe" by Walter Scott. This copy was carried throughout the service of John L. Kraber of the 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, who inscribed the volume several times in bold ink inside the covers. Behind the front cover is three entries that date from the beginning of his service in 1864 through its end in 1865; interestingly, he notes that he is serving in a “pioneer corps” in Bermuda Hundred for the Army of the James. At the back of the book is a wonderful two-page diary-style entry that details the regiment’s service at the Battle of Hatcher’s Run during the Petersburg campaign in early 1865. It is unclear why Kraber was so fond of his copy of Ivanhoe, but it is clear that it was meaningful enough to carry with him throughout nearly two years of eventful soldiering. Book is in good condition, with wear commensurate with having been carried in a knapsack under harsh conditions.
