Native America, North America, Southeastern United States, Eastern Woodland, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A lovely example of a hand axe that is hand-carved from mottled green-gray stone with large cream-hued inclusions. The tool features a thick blade head with an acute edge, a deep groove surrounding the midsection flanked by raised guards, and a tapered trapezoidal butt end. This hand axe was perhaps used more for smoothing and shaping wood or softer materials rather than chipping away at softer types of stone. Size: 7.1" L x 3.25" W (18 cm x 8.3 cm)
