Description
A photograph signed by Nobel Prize-winning German nuclear chemist Otto Hahn (1879-1968), as "Otto Hahn" along the bottom margin. The vintage black and white photo is printed on Mimosa Kiel photo paper (stamped verso). The "Ot" of Hahn's signature is slightly feathered, and there is an old mounting tab verso, else near fine. 2.375" x 4.125." The photo comes with its original transmittal envelope with a Max Planck Society return address pre-printed verso, postmarked from Göttingen, West Germany on August 21, 1967. Addressed to a West Virginia collector, and neatly letter-opened at top. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from R&R Enterprises Autograph Auctions (Amherst, New Hampshire.)
Otto Hahn won the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry after co-discovering nuclear fission along with fellow German scientist Fritz Strassmann. Hahn, who discovered various radioactive isotopes over his career, worked on the German nuclear weapons program during World War II despite personally disagreeing with Nazi dogma. Hahn served as president of the Max Planck Society (the successor organization of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society of Chemistry) after it was established in Göttingen in 1948.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
