Description
Native American, North America, Eastern Woodland, ca. 2000 BCE to 700 CE. A remarkable stone axe head of considerable weight and scale, hand-carved from a mottled gray stone. The massive implement presents a lengthy body with a thick, rounded butt at one end that gently narrows to a curved blade edge at the other side. A deep groove is found near the butt, wrapping around 3 of the 4 sides of the axe head and thus giving it the name 3/4 groove axe head. This groove allows the axe head to be strapped to a handle for use. Size: 11.9" L x 5.5" W (30.2 cm x 14 cm)
