THERESIENSTADT 'GHETTO POLICE' PRISONERS GROUPING
Item Details
Description
A unique group of material and personal effects attributed to a Holocaust victim named Franz Fleischner (1901-1943) who during his time at the Theresienstadt Ghetto in the town of Terezin, served as a member of the Ghetto Police force. The Theresienstadt Ghetto was simultaneously a waystation to the other extermination camps, and a 'retirement settlement' for prominent Jews to mislead their communities about the Final Solution. Like most ghettos, its conditions were deliberately engineered to hasten the death of its prisoners, however Theresienstadt also served a propaganda role, being the subject of a German film which sought to discredit reports of Jewish genocide by showcasing 'good' conditions in that ghetto. It was also like other ghettos in that it had a 'self-governing' Jewish administration and police force. The grouping includes: an original wooden club with a leather cord handle and strap, 12.5 in. long, an exquisitely hand carved guard's whistle with original cord and case, an 8 in. long metal camp spoon, a hand drawn illustration depicting Jewish prisoners being escorted by a guard, a war date photograph depicting an assembly of the Terezin guard, a post war photograph of the National Cemetery at Terezin, and two notes of Theresienstadt ghetto currency. Lastly is an A.L.S. written by Fleischner with ghetto post letterhead, 1p. 8vo., January 14, 1943, to a fellow Jewish prisoner in a nearby mining camp. In part: '...From this morning, I will temporarily join the Ghetto guard reserve...I am already looking forward to a change. We have received six beautiful gifts...if you need something yourself, please contact...it is our wish to get you an offer...' Later that year in December of 1943 Franz Fleischner would be ushered into a transport with 2000 other prisoners from Theresienstadt and taken to Auschwitz where they would all be murdered. Accompanied by images of the Theresienstadt Ghetto layout, and documentation on Fleischner's life. Conditions vary, paper materials moderately worn, yet overall good.
