Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful blue-green glass bottle with a squat, spherical body, and a lengthy, cylindrical neck that rises to a flared rim, all sitting upon a stable, concave base. A petite, conical spout protrudes from the body. Liquid would have been poured into the body of the vessel and tipped forward to facilitate feeding an infant. A thick layer of rainbow-hued iridescence envelops the surface of this vessel, granting it a vibrant appearance! Size: 4.1" Diameter x 5" H (10.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Ancient glass manufacture had begun in the 2nd millennium BCE in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The Greeks and Phoenicians advanced glass technology greatly in the latter 1st millennium BCE. In the early 1st century CE, Roman workshops began producing blown glass on a large scale. Eventually glass vessels came to replace a wide variety of pottery and metal wares in the ancient world. Ancient Roman glass was traded far beyond the Roman Empire. Roman glass vessels have been found in Scandinavia, India, and in Han Dynasty tombs in China.

Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, acquired before 2000
