Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a round bottom and thick walls that rise to a broad, flared rim above a shallow basin, all sitting upon a ring-form base. Skillfully hand-painted in hues of periwinkle, turquoise, marigold, cobalt, and black on a cream-colored ground, the interior of this graceful vessel boasts an elaborate decoration of kaleidoscopic floral and phytomorphic motifs, all encircled by a border of stylized linear designs that adorns the rim. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Note how this mokhfia features a trio of piercings on its foot, 2 of which are strung with a modern strand for suspending the massive vessel. Size: 15.9" Diameter x 4.1" H (40.4 cm x 10.4 cm)
