Description
A very old field used cast bronze bell with ancestral face and braided rope like design on the handle. Such bells were worn by chiefs in the Ijebu region of the Yoruba people in Nigeria, wrapped in a long shawl, on their left hip. They are a sign of the wearers rank and power. This bell shows weathering and wear with some losses to the edges. Likely a late 19th or early 20th century example. The bell measures 7.75 x 4.25 inches.
