Description
A very old field used cast bronze bell with ancestral face and incised and raised designs. Such bells were worn by chiefs in the Ijebu region of the Yoruba people in Nigeria, wrapped in a long shawl, on their left hip. They are a sign of the wearers rank and power. This bell shows weathering and wear with some losses to back edge. Likely an early 20th century example. The bell measures 6 x 3 inches. Provenance: Ex Arnold and Joanne Syrop Collection, New York
