Description
A very old field used cast bronze bell with ancestral face and areas of designs on the sides of the bell and on the face. Such bells were worn by chiefs in the Ijebu region of the Yoruba people in Nigeria, wrapped in a long shawl, on their left hip. They are a sign of the wearers rank and power. This bell shows weathering and wear ,Likely a late 19th or early 20th century example. The bell measures 6.25 x 5 inches. provenance: The Dr Brian Healy estate, NY
