South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful set of 9 cast-brass horse figures, each standing atop an integral, tiered, rectangular plinth. The horses are all affixed with bridles as if ready to ride, and a protruding spike behind each saddle is meant to stabilize a separate rider figure. The horse-and-rider is a classic theme in art from ancient times to modern, emphasizing the unique bond between human and equine. Size of largest: 2.625" L x 1.75" W x 5.75" H (6.7 cm x 4.4 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000

Condition

Two horses have damage to one hind leg, largest horse with damage to proper right side of body, 1 horse with losses to back spike and both ears, 1 horse with loss to tail, and 1 horse with loss to 1 ear; remaining 3 horses are intact and very good. Each horse has light abrasions and nicks to body and base, with softening to finer details, and light encrustations within interior cavities. Great patina throughout.
