Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fabulous hand carved bovine or ungulate bone snuff box with brass fittings and lid, and a carving of the buddha in profile. The bone is hollowed through the marrow cavity to create the receptacle cavity, and a brass plate with a lip is added to the base, and a brass rim for the brass lid to rest flush against, the lid articulates on a hinge. The side is carved with the head of the Buddha in profile - his ears are characteristically elongated, and his curled coiffure is presented as incised circles. Snuff jars would contain powdered tobacco to use as a medicinal remedy, and the head of the auspicious Buddha, might strengthen the substance. Size: 1.625" W x 1.875" H (4.1 cm x 4.8 cm)

Minor abrasions to bone body and base, with light softening to some incised details, otherwise intact and very good. Lid still hinges smoothly. Great patina throughout. Faded old inventory number written atop white pigment beneath base.
