D. Webster ALS to T. Sedgwick, "I am no stranger to your reputation"

WEBSTER, DANIEL. Autograph Letter Signed, "Danl Webster", 1p bifolium, 6.75" x 8.25", Washington, February 11, 1852. Written on pale blue paper with gilt edging. Remnants of red wax seal and previous mounting at verso. Several vertical and horizontal folds, minor wear, else Fine condition.

Webster writes to Attorney Theodore Sedgwick, in full, "I am happy to hear of your safe return to your Country & trust you have had a pleasant residence abroad. If you are to come this way, I should be quite pleased to see you. Our personal intercourse has not been great but I am no stranger to your reputation & I have known other members of your Family so long, & so favorably, that I regard yourself as an acquaintance & a friend."

Theodore Sedgwick III (1811-1859) was an American attorney and author on legal topics. He graduated from Columbia College in 1829. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in May of 1833. In 1858, he became United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Sedgwick III comes from an acknowledged family of attorneys, politicians, and authors; his father was Theodore Sedgwick II (1780-1839) and his grandfather was Theodore Sedgwick (1746-1813).

Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was an American lawyer and statesman who represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress and served as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. As one of the most prominent American lawyers of the 19th century, he argued over 200 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court between 1814 and his death in 1852. During his life, he was a member of the Federalist Party, the National Republican Party, and the Whig Party.
