Item Details
Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience ushabti of slender form standing in mummiform atop an integral plinth with a dorsal pillar on the verso. The figure holds a pick and hoe in hands crossed atop the abdomen while a minimalist seed bag is draped atop the left shoulder. Almond eyes, a compressed nose, rounded cheeks, and a false beard comprise the countenance, and the head is framed with the lappets of the tripartite wig. Lustrous blue glaze envelops the entire figure in enticing color. Size: 1.125" W x 3.9" H (2.9 cm x 9.9 cm)

Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896

Minor nicks and pitting to feet, legs, body, head, and verso, with softening to some finer details, light encrustations, and minor fading to glaze in scattered areas, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to glaze pigment throughout. Adhesive residue beneath feet from old mounting or display stand.
