Item Details
Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664 to 525 BCE. A mold-formed faience ushabti of a tall and slender form that is covered in soft sage green glaze. The figure stands in mummiform atop an integral plinth, holds a pick and hoe in arms crossed atop the chest, and has a seed bag draped over his left shoulder. The countenance exhibits almond-shaped eyes beneath heavy lids, a perky nose above full lips, and ears framed by the lappets of his tripartite wig. A faint column of hieroglyphs is visible along the front of the legs and chest and perhaps provides "Wawa" as the name of the deceased. Size: 1.625" W x 6.5" H (4.1 cm x 16.5 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private British collection, acquired from John Nicholson, Surrey, UK.

#172619
Condition
Restoration to small area of chest with resurfacing and light overpainting. Small loss to lower tip of false beard and top of forehead as shown. Pitting, abrasions, small nicks, fading to hieroglyphs and glaze pigment, and softening to finer details. Nice preservation to figural form. Old inventory label on verso of display stand.
